Energy drinks are beverages that contain stimulant compounds, primarily caffeine, which are marketed as providing mental and physical stimulation. They typically contain sugar (often in excessive amounts) and other sweeteners, herbal extracts, and a variety of amino acid and micronutrient combinations. They come in a staggering number of flavors, sizes, colors, and ingredient combinations, and are most often consumed by people who are looking for a quick and easy way to boost their energy levels. For example, students, athletes, and people who work long hours make up the most common consumers of energy drinks.

With the ever increasing popularity of these beverages, the number of people who use energy drinks on a daily basis is skyrocketing, and this is particularly true among young people. In fact, energy drinks are the highest consumed supplement in young people and adolescents behind multivitamins.1 While usage numbers vary, it is reported that as many as 30% of young people use energy drinks on a regular basis.2 The increasing use of these products (particularly ones with extremely high levels of sugar, caffeine and other stimulants), along with few long term studies as to their safety, has led many to wonder whether it’s safe to use energy drinks on a daily basis. As is the case with most interesting questions, the answer is “it depends.” In the case of energy drinks, the safety and efficacy of a product is largely dictated by the type, quality, and quantity of its ingredients as well as the total amount of product consumed. While there are an endless number of ingredient combinations that can be found in the energy drink market, most will contain a mixture of caffeine, sugar, amino acids, vitamins and minerals.

Caffeine – As their name implies, energy drinks are designed to induce feelings of stimulation and energy, and this is accomplished mainly through the use of caffeine. According to the FDA, healthy adults can safely consume up to 400 mg of caffeine per day without any dangerous negative side effects.3 For reference, an 8 oz. cup of drip coffee has around 110-150 mg of caffeine. Caffeine content in the most popular energy drinks ranges from 70-200 mg per 16 oz., although some energy drinks have over 300 mg in an 8oz serving. Even more concerning is that some manufacturers will include caffeine in a “proprietary blend” of ingredients, which allows them to refrain from listing the drink’s actual caffeine content on the label. Based on these facts, an unsuspecting consumer can easily consume over 400 mg of caffeine per day, increasing the risk of experiencing dangerous side effects.
Sugar – At an energy content of 4 calories per gram, sugar represents a significant source of energy in the diet, and is a primary constituent of many energy drinks. For example, one of the most popular energy drinks available today is also one with the highest sugar content, at 63 grams (nearly a third of a cup) of added sugars in a single 16 oz. serving. While there is evidence that exercise performance is enhanced and fatigue delayed when sugar is consumed during exercise, the majority of energy drinks are not consumed for the purpose of enhancing athletic performance. Because chronic exposure to high daily added sugar intake has been associated with obesity, fatty liver disease, diabetes, and heart disease, daily consumption of high sugar energy drinks is likely not desirable for most people.4
Amino Acids / Vitamins / Minerals – Virtually all energy drinks will contain some combination of amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. While the composition of this blend varies greatly, amino acids such as glycine and L-taurine, as well as the amino acid-derived nutrient, choline are commonly included, due to the positive role they play in things such as immune function, energy metabolism, muscle control, learning and mood.5,6 A mix of B vitamins is often present, as they make their own positive contributions to metabolism, oxygen transport and neurotransmitter production. In particular, vitamin B6 plays an important role in the formation and release of glucose, the body’s main energy source and vitamin B12 is required for the generation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a molecule that provides energy at a cellular level.8
